Grace Holmes

Biography

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Ms. Holmes began her ballet training with Audrey Maduell, Lelia Haller, and Harvey Hysell before joining the San Francisco Ballet School.

Ms. Holmes was promoted to a company position in San Francisco Ballet in 1983 and danced with the company as a soloist until 1995. She then moved to Birmingham, England where she was a senior soloist with Birmingham Royal Ballet.

Her repertoire includes over 100 ballets spanning both classical and modern genres, and she has performed at major theaters across the globe, including Palais Garnier, Kennedy Center, and the Royal Opera House in London. During her career she danced all of the classics and she had the pleasure of working with choreographers of international fame, such as Val Caniparoli, David Bintley, James Kudelka, William Forsythe, and Wayne MacGregor.

After retiring from the stage, she worked in Education and Outreach for Birmingham Royal Ballet, and held the esteemed position of Learning Manager for the Royal Ballet/Royal Opera House at Covent Garden. She implemented a ballet program as Academy Director for Tapestry Dance Company in Austin Texas, was a Professor of Dance at University of Texas at Austin, and was the School Director of Kansas City Ballet for nine years.

Ms. Holmes has a Master’s Degree in Dance in Education and Community from Westhill College at University of Birmingham, UK.

She is pleased to return to San Francisco Ballet.
