Movement for the Whole Community

SF Ballet’s Commitment to the Special Needs Community

During #AutismAwarenessMonth SF Ballet is sharing our commitment to providing opportunities for the special needs community to meaningfully engage in and enjoy ballet and movement.

Before shelter in place, SF Ballet’s Sensory Friendly Dance Workshops, created in partnership with Autism Fun Bay Area, offered a shush-free, shame-free environment for individuals with autism or other disabilities and their families to participate in guided movement classes, meet dancers, and engage in hands-on activity tables. SF Ballet’s Relaxed Dress Rehearsals allowed guests from the special needs community to watch SF Ballet perform in the Opera House from wheelchair-accessible designated seating.

During shelter in place, SF Ballet’s Dance in Schools and Communities teaching artists have created several special needs–friendly movement episodes for the KTVU Plus program SF Loves Learning via a partnership with San Francisco Unified School District.
