SF Ballet Trustee Donald Houghton
On Friday, June 9, 2017 SF Ballet Trustee Donald Houghton died peacefully, at the age of 90. Donald was involved with numerous organizations including the Napa Valley Museum, Colusa County Historical Society, and the Symphony Napa Valley, but he was especially devoted to San Francisco Ballet.
Donald joined the SF Ballet board in 1989 and throughout his tenure, he served as the Chair of the Artistic Committee, and was a member of the Development, Planned Giving, and Nominating Committees. In 2013, he was named a Great Benefactor and two years later, the Ballet’s highest honor—the Lew Christensen Medal—was bestowed upon him. The Medal is reserved for those rare individuals who have left an indelible mark on the history of SF Ballet. In 2016, Donald was the Honorary Chair at the annual SF Ballet School Student Showcase.
Donald was a frequent and amiable presence at the Ballet building—a true friend to the Company. Noted SF Ballet Artistic Director & Principal Choreographer Helgi Tomasson: “I met Donald shortly after I arrived at San Francisco Ballet and throughout the years, he never ceased to be an incredible advocate for us. I always had tremendous respect for him and am grateful for the friendship we had for over three decades; he will be so missed.”
