Helgi Tomasson to Conclude Tenure as Artistic Director

Marking Decades of Innovation and Leadership at San Francisco Ballet

Following 35 years of visionary leadership and creativity, Helgi Tomasson will be concluding his tenure as Artistic Director and Principal Choreographer of San Francisco Ballet by mid-2022. The succession plan, conceived by Tomasson and developed in conjunction with the Board, will ensure a seamless transition to the Ballet’s next Artistic Director.

Over the course of the next 18 months, Tomasson will continue to actively lead the Company and create new ways to connect SF Ballet with its global audiences, with the goal of returning to in-person performances as soon as it is safe to do so. As SF Ballet embarks on its first digital season in 2021, Tomasson is planning the Company’s 2022 Season and the 2023 new works festival. He also, importantly, will be continuing his work with leadership to support the development of initiatives that foster greater diversity and equity throughout the organization.

The Board of Trustees will be forming a committee to launch an international search for Tomasson’s successor in the coming months. The transition of leadership is anticipated to conclude by June 2022.
