Lucy Jewett (1929 – 2023)

IN MEMORIAM: Lucille Jewett (1929–2023)

San Francisco Ballet (SF Ballet) pays tribute to Lucy Jewett, the longest-serving Trustee in the history of the company. Lucille "Lucy" McIntyre Jewett joined the Board of Trustees in 1969, a few years after she and her late husband, George Frederick "Fritz" Jewett, Jr., relocated to the Bay Area. Mrs. Jewett was an active member of the Executive, Nominating and Governance Committees and was instrumental in the "Save Our Ballet" campaign in 1974. When SF Ballet opened its current home at 455 Franklin Street in 1983, the company honored her by naming a large dance studio on the 1st floor the Jewett Studio. She was awarded the coveted Lew Christensen Medal in 2004, reserved to honor rare individuals who have left an indelible mark on the history of San Francisco Ballet, and served as Honorary Chair of SF Ballet's 75th Anniversary Celebration in 2008. Mrs. Jewett was named Vice Chair of the Board in 2002, a title she held until her death on December 22, 2023. Mrs. Jewett served on the Board of Trustees for a remarkable 54 years.

Mrs. Jewett's obituary, which appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, can be found here.
