Meet Artist Maria Guzmán Capron

The scenic curtain art for Dos Mujeres was designed by Oakland-based textile artist Maria Guzmán Capron whose distinctive style embodies a vibrant fusion of colors, textures, and patterns which serve as a poignant exploration of movement, identity, and the enduring power of storytelling through craft.

“Being an artist, I’ve learned to embrace the fact that we are completely fluid as people and as an identity and that we are always changing. We are constantly becoming. With my art, I’m able to make a reflection of what I see in the moment. It helps me understand things I don’t even know are happening to me and then it comes out in the work. It helps me see and imagine a future self that I don’t even know exists yet.”

Capron has been featured in exhibitions at The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, Berkeley Art Center, and Public Gallery in London, among many others. Her work is in the collection of San Francisco’s de Young Museum, and Miami’s Jorge M. Pérez.

Dos Mujeres is onstage April 4–14.
