Choreographer Aszure Barton on Mere Mortals

Crafting A World Premiere

When Mere Mortals takes the stage in January, it will be the culmination of months-long preparations. The creative team, including Choreographer Aszure Barton, Composer Sam Shepherd (Floating Points), Dramaturg Carmen Kovacs, Designer Michelle Janks, and artistic team Hamill Industries have been ideating and crafting all elements of the production including what is seen both on and off stage.

World Ballet Day was our first opportunity to get a peek into the rehearsal process and see Barton at work with the dancers.

“What I love most about the collaborative process is how mysterious it remains; moving between logic and spiritual fantasy is simultaneously exciting and daunting. Dance ignites imagination, that is its power! It’s important to me that the individuals in our audience trust their own imaginations and emotions versus trying to see what we want them to. There is so much to discover in Mere Mortals and I do hope the people who come to experience our work are open to being moved by the beauty and incredible generosity of the artists on stage, they are heroic.”

Mere Mortals returns to the stage April 18–24.
