Boys & Girls Clubs Nutcracker Viewing Parties

Boys & Girls Clubs Nutcracker Viewing Parties

Help Create the Wonder and Excitement of the Nutcracker this Holiday Season

When the doors to the Don Fisher Boys & Girls Clubhouse opened in 2015, just steps away from San Francisco Ballet, a beautiful partnership was formed between Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco and SF Ballet. What started as a weekly residency with dance classes taught by SF Ballet teaching artists at the Don Fisher Clubhouse quickly grew to include classes at clubhouses across the city. Dance Days, special afternoons with dance and music were soon added. The partnership grew even stronger with the first Summer Dance Camp week at SF Ballet for Boys & Girls Clubs of SF members. Eight years later, the annual Summer Dance Camp continues to bring world dance and music to hundreds of Boys & Girls Club kids.

Even through the pandemic, and a year without a live Nutcracker performance, SF Ballet kept the partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs going, and shared the holiday spirit, through Nutcracker viewing parties at the clubhouses. All 12 Boys & Girls Clubs of SF clubhouses and the Boys & Girls Clubs of North San Mateo County were able to watch the SF Ballet Nutcracker from the comfort of their clubhouses and received clubhouse holiday decorations, goodie bags with teddy bears and fun arts and crafts activities, and enjoyed a free holiday meal.

Now entering its fourth year, SF Ballet Nutcracker Viewing Parties has continued to increase the number of youth it reaches. In 2022–2023, nearly 1,200 youths at 12 clubhouses experienced SF Ballet’s Nutcracker, and the same is planned for this December. The program now includes a visit from an SF Ballet teaching artist or SF Ballet School to help bring what they see on the screen to life in their clubhouses and inspire them to tap into their own creativity and expression of dance and music.

"A massive thank you to you and your team for coordinating the Nutcracker viewing party for the Mission Boys & Girls Club! It was such a joy to hear the Nutcracker music throughout the building on Friday afternoon. I appreciate the level of detail, as well as activities that represented a range of modalities. There was something for just about everyone: some Members were really excited about the coloring books, while others were excited to use the stress balls and fidgets. Our Members and staff also loved the step and repeat and props!"

– Kate Pfaff, Boys & Girls Clubs of SF Mission Clubhouse Director

"We really appreciate SF Ballet's sponsorship of our holiday party, youth really enjoyed Nutcracker while eating the dinner."

– Ashley Simmons, Boys & Girls Clubs of SF Excelsior Assistant Clubhouse Director

"It was amazing to see the Clubhouse decked out in Nutcracker and holiday decor, our members enjoying their special treats, and the virtual Nutcracker streaming in front of our kids' very eyes. One cohort in particular really got into the Nutcracker festivities by dressing in ballerina skirts, as you'll see in the photos! It was wonderful to see the kids' faces light up for a day of celebration after what has been such a challenging year. Thank you for helping us bring this joy to our youth for the holiday season!"

– Cailin Stockdale, Boys & Girls Clubs of SF
