Alexander Reneff-Olson has danced principal or featured roles in Tomasson’s Giselle (Hilarion), Nutcracker (King of the Mice, Jack-in-the-Box, Spanish, Arabian, and Russian), The Sleeping Beauty (Puss in Boots), and Swan Lake (Von Rothbart and Czardas); Tomasson/Possokhov’s Don Quixote (Toreadors); Caniparoli’s Ibsen’s House (John Rosmer in “Rosmersholm”) and Tears (soloist); and Wheeldon’s Cinderella (Fates). He created roles in Marston’s Snowblind, Pita’s Björk Ballet and Salome (Hostages), and Possokhov’s Optimistic Tragedy (Eight Sailors).

His repertory includes Balanchine’s Brahms-Schoenberg Quartet (4th movement), Coppélia, Diamonds, Prodigal Son, Scotch Symphony, Serenade, Symphony in Three Movements, and Theme and Variations; Caniparoli’s Lambarena; Cranko’s Onegin; Lifar’s Suite en Blanc; Neumeier’s The Little Mermaid; Nureyev’s Raymonda—Act III (Hungarian); Peck’s Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes; Possokhov’s Firebird, Magrittomania, The Rite of Spring, and Swimmer; Ratmansky’s Shostakovich Trilogy (Symphony #9 and Piano Concerto #1); Robbins’ Fancy Free (Bartender), Glass Pieces, and Opus 19/The Dreamer; Scarlett’s Frankenstein; Tomasson’s On a Theme of Paganini, Prism, and Romeo & Juliet; and Wheeldon’s Rush.

Alexander danced in the 2015 film of Tomasson’s Romeo & Juliet in the inaugural season of Lincoln Center at the Movies: Great American Dance. As a guest artist, he danced the Snow King and Cavalier in Nutcracker with Virginia Regional Ballet in Williamsburg, Virginia, in December 2015.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE COSTUME? WHY?

Von Rothbart in Tomasson's Swan Lake is one of my favorites. It not only incorporates a terrific wardrobe with different variants for each act, but it also uses wigs and makeup to complete the ensemble which helps me bring the character to life.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT AS A DANCER? WHY?

Performing a principal role (Hilarion) for an international audience for the first time in my career, while the Company was on tour in China. It really hit home to me about what I have accomplished and how much more there is that I want to do and share as a performing artist.
