Class Levels and Times
This class will serve as an introduction to the modern dance technique of Lester Horton. This technique emphasizes both strength and flexibility through codified center and across-the-floor exercises. All levels of dance experience are welcome.
Schedule (STUDIO)
- Saturdays 1:45–3:15 PM, June 13, 2026 – August 29, 2026
Ballet Turns Workshop
This special workshop is for ballet students who want to improve the technique of their turns. We will focus on exercises designed to better understand and develop skills needed for a clean execution of pirouettes. Students will get personalized feedback, as every body and level of experience is different and the needs of each individual may vary. We will work on spotting, coordination of the arms and legs, proper alignment of the body, and tips on how to feel more comfortable while turning.
Beginner: During this session, we will also clarify concepts like en dehors and en dedans (inside and outside turns) as well as preparation and landing for pirouettes from 5th and 4th positions.
The workshop will involve both center and across the floor exercises where students will practice and perfect chaines, pique turns, pirouettes en dehors and en dedans from 4th position and possibly work on grand pirouettes (a la seconde, attitude devant, derrière and arabesque). Some students might progress to working on fouetté turns.
It is recommended that students have taken at least 1-3 years of ballet and are able to take one of our ballet technique classes from 3:30 – 5 pm before the workshop, so that students are warm and can get straight to working on turns.
Intermediate/Advanced: Dancers must have at least 3+ years of consistent training and be currently practicing double pirouettes en dehors and en dedans.
Intermediate/Advanced Ballet Jumps Workshop
We are excited to offer the opportunity to our adult community to learn more about jumps in general, batterie (beats), transitional steps commonly used in Grand Allegro, and more exciting “trick” jumps.
Dancers signing up for this workshop should be regularly taking Intermediate and Advanced level classes at SFB or Intermediate – Pre-professional level classes at other studios. If you are a regular student at the SFB school and unsure if this workshop is right for you, you are welcome to consult with any SFB adult program teacher.
This class will be physically challenging and not recommended to dancers with knee, ankle or back issues. We love the eagerness of our adult community to always be learning more, but we also care about your safety particularly when it comes to high-impact technique like jumps. Partial participation/partial observation may be allowed but will depend on the level of demand for this workshop.
It is required for dancers to be familiar with and proficient in petite allegro, medium jumps, and have some experience in Grand Allegro.
Example of vocabulary dancers should be familiar with: Sauté, soubresso, changement, echapé in various positions, assemblé, jeté, sissone fermé and sissone ouvert, saut de basque, pas de chat, temps levé, saut de chat, grand jeté, tour jeté, pas de courou.
