Trainee Performances

For members of the San Francisco Ballet School Trainee Program, there’s no substitute for the thrill—and the challenge—of live performance. This is the culmination of countless hours in the rehearsal studio, a chance to demonstrate the result of their training, and to share the excitement of dance with a live audience. 

In the past, Trainees have collaborated with visiting ballet companies, toured internationally with the Company, and participated in international festivals of dance. In the Bay Area, Trainee performances include outreach programs at schools and community centers, appearances at corporate and special events, as well as their own full-evening performances. The year culminates with the San Francisco Ballet School Student Showcase performances in May.

Collaboration with Houston Ballet II, San Francisco, 2015
The Trainees welcomed dancers from Houston Ballet II to San Francisco for a week-long collaboration, the second part of a 2-year exchange. The week concluded with two performances in the ballet building. The program included Means to an End, a new work by SF Ballet Soloist James Sofranko and Helgi Tomasson's Handel-A Celebration.

The Trainees and SFJazz High School All-Stars Combo came together for a collaborative performance for the community in Hayes Valley.

SF Jazz, San Francisco, 2015
The Trainees came together with the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars Combo to create a unique collaborative project. The project culminated with a workshop performance at SFJAZZ.

Collaboration with Houston Ballet II, Houston, 2014
Trainees traveled to Houston to collaborate on performances with Houston Ballet II. The week was filled with classes, rehearsals, and group activities. The performance included Myles Thatcher's Stone and Steel and Stanton Welch's Brigade. This is part of a 2-year exchange; Houston Ballet II traveled to San Francisco during the 2015-16 school year for a similar week of activities.

Indianapolis City Ballet’s Evening with the Stars Gala, Indianapolis 2014
The Trainees performed Myles Thatcher’s Stone and Steel alongside stars from San Francisco Ballet, New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, and The Royal Ballet.

New National Theatre, Tokyo, Japan 2012
The Trainees were invited to participate in the Ballet Asteras Gala at the New National Theatre, Tokyo. Trainees performed Myles Thatcher's Spinae.

Ecole Supérieure de Danse de Cannes, Cannes, France 2011
SF Ballet School Trainees participated in the 50th anniversary celebration of the Ecole Supérieure de Danse de Cannes, founded by the late Rosella Hightower.

Canada's National Ballet School, Toronto, Canada 2009 and 2013
Trainees participated in the Assemblée Internationale in 2009 and again in 2013. Assemblée Internationale is an international festival celebrating student choreography and dance, hosted by Canada's National Ballet School and it included professional ballet schools from around the world.
