Performance Opportunities

Where the training ends and the dancing begins.

One of the most invaluable aspects of training at the San Francisco Ballet School is the opportunity for many students to gain stage experience at a young age. Performing before a live audience teaches stage decorum, instills confidence, and facilitates the transition from student to professional.

While we’d like to make performance opportunities available to everyone, we currently only offer these opportunities to qualified students enrolled in Levels 1–8 and our Trainee Program. Students attending the Pre-Ballet, Adult Ballet, and Master Classes are not eligible.

Each year San Francisco Ballet selects more than 150 students from SF Ballet School to appear with the company in our annual holiday production of Nutcracker. For many, this is the beginning of a career in dance and a lifelong love affair with ballet. All students who wish to participate in Nutcracker must audition to be cast.

Student Showcase

Each spring we stage an annual Student Showcase, which is a ticketed public event. Performances begin with class demonstrations given by the lower-level students. Select advanced-level students then perform in ballets from the Company's repertory, as well as in works created especially for them. Preceding one of the performances is a fundraising dinner, which helps support the scholarship programs of SF Ballet School.

Additional Opportunities

Every season San Francisco Ballet stages productions that may include performance opportunities for students. These ballets include Romeo & Juliet, The Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Swan Lake, and Don Quixote among others. In addition, advanced students may be selected to perform with the Company in some of their larger repertory works. Students from our Trainee Program have the opportunity to participate in performances of the San Francisco Opera and other ballet companies visiting the Bay Area.

“Imagine being 11 years old, loving ballet, and being backstage with the Company dancers on one of the most exciting nights of the season, wearing a tutu and a tiara. Thrilling!”

Ballet Classes

Under the leadership of Director Patrick Armand, San Francisco Ballet School is the official school of SF Ballet. The diverse curriculum, grounded in classical technique, also included classes in contemporary dance, corps de ballet, music conditioning, and character dance—all in a safe, professional, and family-oriented environment.

Trainee Program

SF Ballet School’s formidable program immerses students in an environment that teaches discipline, self-motivation, technical expertise, grace, and a lifelong appreciation for the arts—all characteristics necessary for a professional ballet career but equally valuable to a life outside dance. Although SF Ballet School is most importantly an unrivaled classical ballet academy, it is also a program that encourages growth within and outside of the studio.
