Lowell Liebermann is one of America's most frequently performed and recorded living composers. One of his more recent commissions is an original score for Liam Scarlett’s Frankenstein, a full-length narrative ballet that premiered in 2016 in London (the ballet is a co-production between The Royal Ballet and SF Ballet.)
Lowell, born in New York City in 1961, began studying composition at age 14. He made his performing debut two years later at Carnegie Recital Hall, playing his Piano Sonata, Op.1, which he composed when he was 15. He holds a bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from the Juilliard School of Music.
The New York Times considers Lowell “as much of a traditionalist as an innovator,” and his music has wide audience appeal. He has written more than 100 works, several of which have gone on to become standard repertory for their instruments, including his Sonata for Flute and Piano, which has been recorded more than 20 times, and his Gargoyles for Piano, which has been recorded 15 times.
Lowell’s body of work includes two full-length operas, two symphonies, a concerto for orchestra, three piano concertos, and concertos for many other instruments. In the realm of chamber music, Lowell has composed four string quartets; four cello sonatas; two piano trios; sonatas for flute, violin, viola, flute, and harp; and much more. A pianist himself, he has written a wealth of music for the solo instrument, much of which frequently appears on concert and competition programs.
In 2001, Lowell was awarded the very first American Composers' Invitational Award by the 11th Van Cliburn Competition after the majority of finalists chose to perform his Three Impromptus, which were selected from works submitted by 42 contemporary composers. He has also received a Charles Ives Fellowship from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, as well as awards from American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI).
He resides in New Jersey with his partner, William Hobbs, also a pianist and conductor.
