A New TV Show with SF Ballet Education and DISC

SF Loves Learning, In Partnership with SFUSD and KTVU

When San Francisco’s Shelter-in-Place order went into effect, the San Francisco Ballet Education & Training department was midway through long-planned programs to bring dance education to young people. As the Company’s performances were suspended in the Opera House, SF Ballet’s Education Programs were also paused, including free in-school residencies for K-12 schools, after-school dance classes at Boys & Girls Clubs, field trips to SF Ballet, and programming for the special needs community. But in an unlikely moment, the hallmark Dance in Schools and Communities (DISC) program, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, may have found its widest-reaching program yet.

In partnership with San Francisco United School District (SFUSD) and KTVU, SF Ballet is proud to be part of SF Loves Learning. This new daily television show, created specifically for young students at home during Shelter-in-Place, will allow DISC to share the joy of dance with over 10,000 schoolchildren.

Airing Monday through Friday from 2-3 pm on KTVU Plus, each episode of SF Loves Learning includes a daily lesson taught by SFUSD teachers, a 10-minute interactive dance lesson with DISC Teaching Artists, world music lessons by DISC Musicians, and more. The show is aimed at students in Pre-Kindergarten through 2nd grade, and especially underserved families with limited or no access to online distance learning options.

SF Loves Learning began airing on April 20 and will run through June 2 to support distance learning through the end of the SFUSD school year.

Don’t have KTVU Plus? No problem. Episodes are also available on SFUSD’s website and YouTube channel.

School closures haven’t stopped DISC from completing their spring term in-school residencies, either. SF Ballet Education staff and DISC Teaching Artists are instead offering pre-recorded video lessons and live Zoom instruction to their SFUSD classes.

Grab your young learners and join SF Ballet by tuning into SF Loves Learning every Monday-Friday from 2-3 pm on KTVU Plus.
