Norika Matsuyama was born in Chiba, Japan, and trained at Yuki Miho Ballet in Japan and at Palos Verdes Ballet, Lauridsen Ballet Centre, and San Francisco Ballet School in the United States. She joined San Francisco Ballet as a member of the corps de ballet in 2014.

She has danced principal or featured roles in Tomasson’s Giselle (pas de cinq, Giselle’s Friends, and solo Wili), Nutcracker (Sugar Plum Fairy and Spanish), and Romeo & Juliet (Acrobats, Juliet’s Friends); Tomasson/Possokhov’s Don Quixote (Kitri’s Friends, Cupid, Bridesmaids); excerpts from Balanchine’s Theme and Variations (soloist); Forsythe’s The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude; Makarova’s (after Petipa) “The Kingdom of the Shades” from La Bayadère, Act II (solo Shade, 3rd variation); and Thatcher’s Manifesto (principal). Her repertory also includes Wheeldon’s Cinderella.

Matsuyama danced in the film of Tomasson’s Romeo & Juliet (Acrobats) as part of the inaugural season of Lincoln Center at the Movies: Great American Dance.
