Drop-In Ballet Classes

Drop-in classes run like a traditional ballet class starting at the barre and then moving to the center through traditional class exercises and combinations. Be prepared to sweat (at least a little) and to have a good time.

It is recommended that true ballet beginners attend the Beginner Ballet series or True Beginner Ballet drop-in classes before attending the Beginner/Intermediate drop-in class. Participants will need many years of consistent classes before attending an intermediate/advanced class.

Participants are encouraged to arrive dressed and ready for class as changing facilities are limited.

You can pay online by class for $22 or purchase a 10-class-card for $200.

Participant Requirements

Students must be at least 16-years-old to participate in our Adult Ballet Classes.

For the safety and consideration of all, studio doors will close 5 minutes after class begins and no one will be permitted to enter class.

Participants must wear ballet slippers in class.

Our Studios & Facilities

Students may check-in and use the designated studio and restrooms on the first floor 15 minutes prior to the start of each class. Restrooms and a water fountain are located outside of the studios. Showers and designated changing rooms are not available.

Gentle Ballet

Gentle Ballet is a class especially for dancers who want a gently paced ballet class. This is run like a traditional ballet class, but at a slower pace and is less strenuous.

True Beginner Ballet

True Beginner is intended only for adults who are new to ballet. If you regularly attend our drop-in classes, please leave space for true beginners. Please note that ballet slippers are required, and students are not permitted to wear pointe shoes.

Beginner/Intermediate Ballet

The Beginner/Intermediate class is for students who have completed the Beginner Ballet Series, have completed a minimum of 8 True Beginner drop-in classes, or have previous ballet experience.

Intermediate/Advanced Ballet

The Intermediate/Advanced level is a fast-paced class for students who have been regularly taking classes for several years. Students should have an in-depth knowledge of ballet terminology and be proficient with center work.

“An in-class experience allows you to enhance what you see on stage in the Opera House. Our students range in age and ability, from 16 years old to most in their late 60s and early 70s. Some of our students have never had a ballet class before, while other have had years of experience.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Who teaches the classes?

The following SF Ballet School faculty regularly teach the Adult Ballet classes: Tina LeBlanc, Jeff Lyons, Cecelia Beam, and Jordan Hammond.

What if I’m not sure I will be able to complete the class?

We encourage you to attend and complete as much of the class as you feel capable of. If you need to sit out for the last combination or two, that’s just fine, you’re welcome to watch.

Can I watch a class before taking one?

Unfortunately, we do not allow class observations. We encourage you to try it out and see if you like it. You’ll have a much better understanding of the class if you’re up and moving than by sitting and watching.

What happens if I’m late to class?

For the safety and consideration of all, studio doors will close five minutes after class begins.
