Meet the dreamers, the lovers, and the witch of ballet’s first Romantic classic

Each character in La Sylphide comes to life through Bournonville’s enchanting choreography. First performed in 1836, it is a defining ballet of the romantic era, blending human desire with the supernatural. This brief guide introduces the key characters who drive this timeless tragedy.

THE SYLPH

The Unattainable Ideal

The ethereal woodland sprite who captures James’ heart after appearing the night before his wedding day. Having watched over him since his childhood, the Sylph deeply loves him and fiercely opposes his marriage to Effy. With delicate white wings hovering beyond earthly bounds, she is elusive and cannot be touched. Though sincere in her affection, the Sylph belongs to another realm and cannot survive human possession. Representing the Romantic ideal of beauty, freedom, and the allure of the unattainable, she embodies the human tendency of insatiable longing–a dream that shatters the moment it is grasped.

JAMES

The Restless Dreamer

A young Scottish farmer soon to wed Effy and prone to elaborate daydreams, James is enchanted by the Sylph. He has difficulty reconciling reality with fantasy and becomes increasingly detached from the tangible world around him. Faced with a choice between a stable, ordinary life and the seductive potential for transcendence, James’ fatal flaw is not that he dreams, but that he cannot accept the limits of reality.

EFFY

The Earthly Bride

James’ bride-to-be, grounded in reality and eager to spend the rest of her life with him. She senses his growing distance but cannot figure out why. Effy represents stability, fidelity, and the natural world–a life James risks losing while pursuing illusion.

GÜRN

The Practical Suitor

A huntsman and friend of James with an undeniable crush on Effy. Practical and perceptive, he’s convinced James has gone mad after witnessing him chase thin air.

Quick to join in on a lively folk dance, Gürn remains rooted in the real world and is ready to step in when James steps away.

MADGE

The Witch of Fate

An old, vengeful witch who can read palms and reveal true fortunes. At odds with James, Madge is aware of his infatuation with the Sylph. Wronged by James and keen on making him suffer, she plots revenge and instigates tragedy, personifying fate’s grimmer hand.
