Sarah Van Patten has danced principal roles in Tomasson’s Giselle (Giselle, Myrtha), Nutcracker (Sugar Plum Fairy, Grand Pas de Deux Ballerina), Romeo & Juliet (Juliet), The Sleeping Beauty (Lilac Fairy), and Swan Lake (Odette/Odile); Tomasson/Possokhov’s Don Quixote (Mercedes); Balanchine’s Coppélia (Dawn); Cranko’s Onegin (Tatiana); Neumeier’s The Little Mermaid (Mermaid, Princess); and Wheeldon’s Cinderella (Cinderella, Stepmother Hortensia, Stepsister Edwina). She created roles in Caniparoli’s Double Stop; Elo’s Double Evil; Marston’s Snowblind (Zeena); McGregor’s Borderlands; McIntyre’s Presentce; Morris’ Joyride; Page’s Guide to Strange Places; Peck’s Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming; Pita’s Björk Ballet; Ratmansky’s From Foreign Lands; Tomasson’s The Fifth Season and Trio; and Wheeldon’s Within the Golden Hour, among others.
Her repertory includes Balanchine’s Allegro Brillante, Diamonds, Emeralds, The Four Temperaments, Serenade, Stravinsky Violin Concerto, Symphony in C, and Symphony in Three Movements; Ashton’s Symphonic Variations; Caniparoli’s Lambarena; Liang’s Symphonic Dances; Lifar’s Suite en Blanc; van Manen’s Variations for Two Couples; McGregor’s Chroma; de Mille’s Rodeo; Morris’ Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes; Peck’s Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes; Possokhov’s Firebird; Nureyev’s Raymonda—Act III; Ratmansky’s Shostakovich Trilogy; Robbins’ Afternoon of a Faun, The Concert, and Dances at a Gathering; Scarlett’s Hummingbird; Thatcher’s Ghost in the Machine; Tomasson’s 7 for Eight, Caprice, Nanna’s Lied, On a Theme of Paganini, and Prism; Tudor’s Jardin aux Lilas; and Wheeldon’s After the Rain Pas de Deux and Rush.
Sarah received an Isadora Duncan Dance Special Award for “Many Faces of Giselle” in 2012 and Denmark’s New Talent Prize as a Royal Danish Ballet apprentice in 2001.
What ballet or role would you like to dance but haven't yet? Why?
Lady of the Camellias because its a beautiful work. Also, I have a history of working with John Neumeier and love his ballets.
What's your biggest challenge as a dancer? Why?
Time management is a challenge because I'm a mom.
What's your perfect day?
Brunch with my husband and son, visiting the playground, taking an afternoon nap, and dinner with friends and family.
