Susan Kang
Principal Flute

Biography
Originally from Southern California, Susan Kang earned a Bachelor of Music at Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music and both a Master of Music and Artist Diploma at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. Her principal teachers have included Leone Buyse and John Thorne.
Kang joined San Francisco Ballet Orchestra as a principal flute in 2022. She was previously a principal flute for Houston Ballet Orchestra and served as acting principal flute for Houston Grand Opera Orchestra.
Kang has worked under the direction of prominent conductors such as Thomas Ades, Stéphane Denève, Andris Nelsons, Gianandrea Noseda, and Klaus Mäkelä. She spent summers at Aspen Music Festival, Bowdoin International Music Festival, Krzyżowa Chamber Music Festival, Tanglewood Music Center, and Verbier Festival Orchestra in Switzerland. An avid chamber musician, Kang has collaborated with David Bowlin, Jon Kimura Parker, and Radovan Vlatković, among other esteemed artists.
Kang has won first prizes in the Donald Peck International Flute Competition and Seattle Flute Club’s Young Artist Competition. Her extensive solo engagements have included her live radio broadcasted recital at the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Series in Chicago, and her performance of Einojuhani Rautavaara’s Flute Concerto Dances with the Winds (Op.69) as a soloist with Shepherd School Symphony and Chamber Orchestra.
