San Francisco Ballet School Performs Student Showcase at Novellus Theater at YBCA, June1-3, 2011

Three Performances Benefit the Prestigious San Francisco Ballet School

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, May 17, 2011—The San Francisco Ballet School, the official school of San Francisco Ballet, has announced the repertory for the 2011 Student Showcase. San Francisco Ballet School’s students and faculty will present three Showcase performances, consisting of class demonstrations and repertory works, at the Novellus Theater at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, June 1-3, 2011. Following the performance on June 2, the San Francisco Ballet Auxiliary will host a fundraising dinner benefiting the San Francisco Ballet School’s scholarship and financial aid programs.

On June 1 and 3, audiences will get a glimpse of the progression in ballet training, from beginning students giving class demonstrations, to advanced-level students on the verge of professional careers. The advanced-level students will perform excerpts from SF Ballet Artistic Director & Principal Choreographer Helgi Tomasson’s Ballet d’Isoline, a new work, Promenade, choreographed by SF Ballet School faculty member Parrish Maynard, Timepiece by SF Ballet Corps de Ballet member Myles Thatcher, and Tomasson’s Beads of Memory.

The June 2 performance will include the “Waltz of the Golden Hours” from Coppélia, featuring 24 young students, with choreography by George Balanchine. (Please note that this performance will not include class demonstrations.)

“The annual Student Showcase allows students to present their technical expertise, while offering them the rare opportunity to gain performance experience,” said Lola de Avila, associate director of the San Francisco Ballet School. “This year, students will have the challenge of dancing a new work by Parrish Maynard, and a ballet by former SF Ballet School student Myles Thatcher, in addition to more classical works including excerpts from Helgi Tomasson’s Ballet d’Isoline.”
