Giselle – the great romantic ballet returns!

The 2014 season opens with Helgi Tomasson’s spectacular production of Giselle, the heartbreaking tale of a peasant girl with a fragile heart and a passion for dancing. One of the greatest romantic ballets in the classical repertory, this magnificent production takes audiences on an unforgettable journey, from joyous celebrations in a Rhineland village to a lush forest glade, with its troupes of ethereal “Wili’s” (the spirits of young maidens who must spend eternity dancing away each night until dawn). Upon its premiere, The New York Times said, “Watching San Francisco Ballet’s Giselle, I marveled more than ever at what a haven of classical style this company has become.”

The 1999 world premiere of Helgi Tomasson's Giselle was underwritten by The Hellman Family, The Edward E. Hills Fund, Lucy and Fritz Jewett, and an anonymous donor, in honor of Chris Hellman.  This project was made possible, in part, by a grant from the National Dance Residency Program (NDRP), a program underwritten by The Pew Charitable Trusts and administered at the New York Foundation for the Arts.
