Community Matinees

Creativity. Passion. Empowerment.

San Francisco Ballet wishes to share a love of dance with the broadest possible audience. Each year the Company offers students and seniors the opportunity to obtain group tickets for performances at deeply discounted prices. We offer two Community Matinees to learn about the creative process of becoming a professional dancer, and the intricate details of putting a performance on the Opera House stage.

This informative and fun 75-minute program includes:
  • An introduction to ballet as an art form—its historical and contemporary landscape.
  • The opportunity to meet, hear from, and see performances by students from the San Francisco Ballet School who are training to become professional dancers.
  • Interviews with SF Ballet’s orchestra conductor, a choreographer, and members of the stage crew who transform dancers and stage through music, dance steps, costumes, scenery, and artistic direction.
  • Ballet excerpts performed by San Francisco Ballet dancers, described by The New York Times as, “the most impressively diverse ballet company in America.”

All Tickets Only $8
With tickets only $8 each, this is a wonderful way to enhance the communities' exposure to the performing arts, the transformative power of creativity, and to provide increased ideas for what they can do with their lives.

As a way of preparing and following up on this performance the San Francisco Ballet Center for Dance Education provides supplemental study guides that contain ballet-specific information along with material on ballet, dance, and viewing tips.

Performances take place at the historic War Memorial Opera House.
