Admission is by audition only. San Francisco Ballet School begins accepting students for formal ballet training at age 7½. The ideal candidate is a healthy child with a physique possessing attributes that are generally considered requisite for professional accomplishments in classical ballet: a straight and supple spine, legs that are well turned out from the hip joints, and correctly arched feet. The child should also have an ear for music and an instinct for movement. All students are accepted on a trial basis.
Auditions are held in the late spring for boys and girls ages 7½ –10 with or without previous training, and for students ages 11-18 with previous training. The School prefers students at the intermediate and advanced levels to audition for and attend the School's Summer Session. During
the Summer Session, select students are invited to attend the school year
program. Summer Session auditions are held nationally in January and February.
San Francisco Ballet School offers a Pre-Ballet program for students ages six and seven. No audition is required, but class size is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration begins in late spring. To request an application, please contact school@sfballet.info. Pre-Ballet is not a part of the graded curriculum at SF Ballet School and students are still required to audition for admission to Level One.
San Francisco Ballet School accepts students of any race, color, ethnicity, or national origin.
