Admissions

The School begins accepting students for formal ballet training at age 7½. Admission is by audition only, and youngsters must meet very specific requirements. The ideal candidate is a healthy child with a physique possessing attributes that are generally considered requisite for professional accomplishments in classical ballet: a straight and supple spine, legs that are well turned out from the hip joints, and correctly arched feet. The child should also have an ear for music and an instinct for movement. All beginners are accepted on a trial basis.

Auditions are held in the late spring for boys and girls ages 7½ –10 with or without previous training, and for students ages 11 and up with previous training. The School prefers students at the intermediate and advanced levels to audition for and attend the summer session.

San Francisco Ballet School offers a Pre-Ballet program for students ages 6 and 7. No audition is required, but class size is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration begins in late spring. Pre-Ballet is not a part of the graded curriculum at SF Ballet School and students are still required to audition for admission to Level One.

San Francisco Ballet School accepts students of any race, color, ethnicity, or national origin.
